Inuksuk Build
LIVEElder Irniq builds niungvaliruluit - inuksuit with windows. When you look through the window, you are pointed in a particular direction, usually towards a good hunting or fishing spot. Our inuksuk will point towards Iqaluit which means "place of many fish" in Inuktitut.
Elder Piita Irniq
Elder Irniq was born in an igloo at a hunting camp in 1947 at Lyon Inlet near Repulse Bay, Northwest Territories (now known as Naujaat, Nunavut). As a young boy he attended Residential School in Chesterfield Inlet. Elder Irniq is a long-time Northern politician, a former Commissioner of Nunavut, and an Inuit cultural teacher. He is also an inuksuk builder who has built inuksuit in many countries around the world. He presently lives with his family in Ottawa, Ontario.
